History at Westwoodside Academy
Subject Intent Statement:
The teaching of history forms an important part of our curriculum at Westwoodside. We aim to provide our children with a knowledge based, immersive and engaging curriculum which inspires them to be inquisitive and to develop a desire to learn about people and events in the past, both in Britain and the wider world. Children will develop their own sense of identity and will be proud to be themselves. We encourage our children to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern multi-cultural Britain and, by considering how people lived in the past, they are better able to make their own life choices and are proud to be themselves. Aligning with our core concepts (chronology, investigating and interpreting evidence, historical significance, similarities and differences, cause and consequence, change and continuity) we teach our children to understand how events in the past have influenced our lives today. Children develop a complex knowledge of local and national history, alongside the history of the wider world. At Westwoodside children will learn about their local demographic and make links to changes over time. We aim to equip children with knowledge of historical facts, an understanding of the methods of historical enquiry, the ability to think critically, ask questions and to be able to explain and analyse historical evidence. Children develop empathy for others, they have opportunities to learn from mankind’s past mistakes and will not be afraid to take on challenge. We want to equip our children with the necessary skills and language to confidently express their point of view. We aspire to create a life-long love of learning.

Learning on a page...
The following learning pages are devised by the school to support children to remember this term's history learning. The use of symbols alongside vocabulary and the simplicity of layout should compliment our teaching and so support all of our children to know more and remember more in history. Encourage your child to talk to you about the images and vocabulary detailed across each page.
