RE at Westwoodside Academy

Subject Intent Statement:

At Westwoodside Church of England Primary Academy, we believe that it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. Through Religious Education, pupils develop their knowledge of world faiths and other world views as well as their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We want our pupils to develop an understanding of the world and to be able to develop their own world view, based on a respect of others, knowing that their ideas can have impact.

Louie YR "I think RE is good because we learn about people in the world. We learn about Jesus, God's son and how he helps people."

Cara Y5 "I enjoy finding out what other people think and appreciate their beliefs. I like talking about what I personally think and supporting others to have their own opinion too."

Bobbi Y6 "We produce work in a variety of ways in RE - we have discussions, we make PowerPoint presentations, we create artwork and have even made a snakes and ladders game to show choices. It's important to learn about other people and how they live and also how their faith affects their life."

Main core concepts from the diocese:

We study Christianity, Islam and Hinduism in depth, as well as finding out about other worldviews.

In RE we also use the following three areas to develop pupils’ abilities to make sense of texts related to the core concepts, to understand the impact of belief in these concepts in the lives of people of faith and their community, and to make connections beyond the concepts with other learning, including pupils’ own responses.
