Summer Term in Year 1 Attenborough

This term our main theme will follow on nicely from our London theme, as we will be exploring the nations that make up the United Kingdom!

Here are some of the things that we will be exploring across our curriculum this half term:

Writing: We will be using the book Winter Sleep as an inspiration in our class writing. This will give us the opportunity to make links with some of our Science work.

Reading: Reading sessions will be carried out each week ranging from individual, group and class reading. We will be looking at a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, linking to our topic where possible. Please continue to read AT LEAST 3 times a week at home.

Phonics: Daily phonics sessions will continue, linking in with our reading and writing sessions. The weekly spelling tests will resume, based on sounds taught the previous week for consolidation. Tests will be every Friday morning. New spellings will be inside reading record booklets. INFORMATION REGARDING THE PHONICS SCREENING SENT HAS BEEN SENT HOME. any questions about this - please ask.

Maths: We are looking at place value of numbers up to 50, as well as length, height, weight and volume.

Science: Our theme for this half term is 'Plants', where we will be planning a small vegetable patch in the school garden, exploring what happens when growing from seeds and small plants. Children will be investigating key features of plants and what they need to grow.

RE: This half term we are finding out about Special Places. We will be talking about our own special places and what makes them so special to us, along with how we should behave there. We will then build on our knowledge of St Nicholas church and explore the building along with symbols and functions of a church.

PHSCE: We will be moving on to our next Jigsaw theme of Celebrating Difference, which will link in nicely to our school values and vision.

PE: This is on a Tuesday, please continue to send chidren in their PE clothes on that day.
