Scunthorpe United Reading Stars
Year 4/5T have been chosen to take part in the Scunthorpe United Reading Stars (SURS) programme. This is an exciting opportunity for children to engage with and hopefully inspire a love of reading.
The programme runs over a 10 week period and the children will be involved in many exciting activities. Weekly lessons have been planned to suit children of all abilities.
We look forward to sharing our success with you.
Parents Reading Workshop
As part of our Scunthorpe United Reading Stars programme we have been sent a short video which we would like to share with parents of children in 4/5T. The film is delivered by Sarah Tipler, who shares the importance of reading, and listening to children read. Sarah gives tips on how to support your child’s reading if they are struggling and how reading supports our emotional and mental well-being.

Homework 28.05.21
The children have been involved with many SURS activities this week, and they have been set a couple of tasks to complete over the half-term.
Your child(ren) will be bringing home two competition sheets. The first asks them to design a healthy and nutritious snack and the second is to design a new kit for the Scunthorpe United team. The SURS team will judge the entries and the children with the winning recipe and those with the winning kit design will receive a prize.
We have discussed these in class, and the children know what is required. Whilst in school, they have already had time to practise designing their healthy snack bar.
Please can you support them in completing these sheets (they have all been very enthusiastic and focused in school) – we need to submit all completed entries no later than Friday 11th June, which means that the children will have the first week of the new term to hand in their completed entries.

We met the poet Ian Bland.
On Friday 28th May, we were visited (virtually) by children’s poet Ian Bland. He explained how he started as a poet and what makes a really good poem. Ian read some of his poems to the children and they also had the chance to perform poems with him too. Everyone really enjoyed meeting him and he has inspired us to have a go at writing our own poems.
Getting down to work!
Katie and Brooke shared their finished poem with Ian and the other two schools that joined us in our virtual workshop. Well done girls!
Ian's Poem
This was our inspiration to write our own narrative poem.
Engaged in the poetry session.
Working together - There were some amazing narrative poems. Everyone tried really hard to add rhyme and rhythm to their poems.
Meeting the Players
On Tuesday 4th May, 4/5T class met Scunthorpe United footballers Mason and Jai.
During our virtual interview, Phoebe, Kayden and Connor asked them questions about their football careers and why they thought reading was an important life skill. Both players agreed that they were ‘living the dream’ and they encouraged us to train and work hard, and then we too will be successful in whatever we choose to do.
Our next virtual meeting, later this month will be with the poet Ian Bland and we are very much looking forward to his poetry workshop.
Meet the author
On Friday 30th April, Year 4/5 met the successful children’s author Tom Palmer at the virtual launch of their Scunthorpe United Reading Stars programme (SURS).
Tom has worked with schools around the UK for many years and has so far written 54 children’s books. Themes include spies, detectives, ghosts, war, rugby, friendship, and of course his love of football.
The children have each received a free copy of his book Ghost Stadium and Tom read the first few chapters to the class.
We also took part in a virtual quiz and a penalty shoot-out competition, we were valiant runners-up.
