Maths at Westwoodside Academy
Subject Intent Statement:
At Westwoodside CE Primary Academy we want to ensure that maths is accessible to all children, and we aim to maximise the development of every child’s ability, confidence and achievement in maths. We want our children to develop a sound understanding of maths achieved through exploration, practice and application over time. We want them to make deep connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. We intend to equip them with the skills of quick recall, calculation, reasoning and problem solving that they need in life beyond our school. We want them to know that maths is essential to everyday life, science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. We want them to know how to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in a range of contexts. We will provide opportunities for them in science and other subjects in order that they make the connections in learning needed to apply their skills and enjoy a greater depth of understanding as well as complete real-life challenges and therefore give learning a sense of purpose. We intend to identify and address misconceptions and potential barriers speedily to ensure our children become confident mathematicians with inquisitive minds who are not afraid to take risks due to their secure mathematical foundations. We are committed to ensure that all children are able to enjoy mathematics and experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically.
"I like challenges and times tables, I use TTRockstars everyday at home." Y3
"I enjoy division especially the gold questions and APE challenges." Y5
"We will need maths for everything in the future. Jobs, shopping, buying a house and doing a degree." Y6
We have adopted the White Rose Maths Scheme
Our curriculum is planned in KS1 and KS2 using National Curriculum progression and broken down into smaller steps by following the White Rose Sequence of Learning to ensure that new knowledge and skills build on prior learning and work towards defined end points. Daily lessons are planned by all class teachers to include clear lesson intentions, counting / tables recall, a starter activity (to aid recall and
retention), main teaching input and independent practice using a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, and maths talk opportunities . Children in Y1 transition from the way maths is implemented in EYFS, with both adult led and provision activities at the beginning of the year transitioning to the lesson model used in
KS1 and KS2 . Staff refer to the Calculation Policy when teaching formal methods, ensuring
consistency and progression across school. Reasoning tasks are also accessed daily by all children through ‘APE’ activities alongside calculation methods. Practising the rapid recall of number facts is vital throughout school. A daily counting / number fact / tables recall happens daily as part of our maths lessons
in the form of chanting, singing and games. From Year 2, all children have access to their own personal account of ‘Times Tables Rock stars’ where they can practise as well as compete against other pupils and classes in school.
